About this role

Boilermaker will construct iron/steel structures to specifications. They will work with the mechanical department in an industrial setting in a plant along with other miscellaneous projects involved with the DCD Mechanical Division. Work may include, but is not limited to, bolting up, dismantling, and servicing industrial equipment identified for repair as part of any job scope.



Position Responsibilities

  • Read blueprints and specification to determine the scope of work: locations, quantities, and sizes of materials required.
  • Identify all tools required for tasks.
  • Identify safety risks and the precautions required to eliminate those risks.
  • Fabricate equipment according to blueprints or instructions from supervisors.
  • Hoist equipment and tools into location via bull rigging or crane.
  • Verify vertical and horizontal alignment of structural-steel members, using plumb bobs, laser equipment, transits, and/or levels.
  • Connect columns, beams, and girders with bolts, following blueprints and instructions from supervisors.
  • Bolt aligned structural-steel members in position for permanent riveting or bolting.
  • Pull, push, or pry iron/steel equipment into approximate positions for bolting into place.
  • Perform work in, on or around boilers, exchangers, towers and vessels of all sizes.
  • Cut, bend, and weld iron/steel pieces, using metal shears, torches, and welding equipment.


Required Qualifications

  • Ability to take lead in erection of steel, fabrication, grid layout, rigging etc. 
  • Ability to perform all job duties of craft trade.
  • Ability to read, understand IFC drawings. 
  • Ability to make hang list, read details off drawings, read all notes on drawings before erection, locate and understand ECN’s and holds on drawings.
  • Understand when to stop production work and when a RFI needs to be initiated. 
  • Read and understand craft specs and cut sheets, craft spec procedures and recommendations.
  • Able to locate piece marks for correct views and know how to pick out different elevations.
  • Being able to know the correct installation based on the orientation.
  • Knowledge of symbols based on legend. 
  • Knowledge of all types of safe rigging practices (chokers, slings, etc.).
  • Know all aspects of connecting.
  • Correct procedures of Bolting.
  • Torque vs Tension.
  • Knowledge of Tension.
  • Turn of the nut method.
  • Knowledge of specialty tools (torque wrench, Skidmore, torque guns, mag drills, hogan drills).
  • Basic knowledge of welding (machine set up, Mig, stick, gas, etc.).
  • Knowledge of cutting torch, set up, dangers, usage, cleaning, types of tips and when to use the different types of tips.
  • Knowledge of JLG’s man baskets, cranes.
  • Basic maintenance (inspections).
  • Safe operations practices.
  • Flagging of cranes, forklifts, manlifts.
  • Footage, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions to perform all craft duties.
  • Must be willing to perform any additional duties as instructed.
  • Takes full ownership of responsibilities and executes independently with minimal supervision after initial scope and expectations are established.


Qualification Highlights

  • Must have 4+ years experience as a Boilermaker Helper, Boilermaker Ironworker or comparable position with Experience. 
  • Must possess all Knowledge Skills and Abilities for positions (see below).
  • Must be able to meet all physical requirements.
  • Must be able to work at unlimited heights.



Physical Requirements

  • The employee will be required to stand, walk, bend, squat, sit, and lift for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to talk and hear to effectively communicate.
  • Will use arms and hands to signal, grasp, hold, turn, push, and pull objects, materials, controls, and tools.
  • May be required to lift, carry, and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Will work at heights, climb ladders and stairways, and may occasionally work from platforms or scaffolding while using appropriate fall protection.
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions, including heat, rain, cold, and wind, while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Required PPE includes, but is not limited to, hard hats, safety glasses or goggles, earplugs, masks or respirators, high-visibility safety vests, leather gloves, and steel-toed work boots.
