Shift Process Integration Engineer (Chip R&D / NPI / Wafer Fab Semiconductor)

Lumentum is seeking a junior Process Integration Engineer to join our Chip R&D team at our Caswell site in Northamptonshire, UK. In this role, you will contribute to the development and management of wafer fabrication processes for indium phosphide (InP)โ€“based semiconductor optical components.

This is an on-site, shift-based position 4 days on, 4 days off.

Role Overview

The Chip R&D team is responsible for developing and introducing into production advanced photonic devices, including lasers, modulators, receivers, and photonic integrated circuits (PICs) for cloud and networking applications.

As a Process Integration Engineer, you will play a key role in translating device designs into manufacturable, high-performing semiconductor chips. This requires close collaboration with cross-functional engineering teams to solve complex technical challenges with tangible commercial impact.

Key Responsibilities

  • Integrate wafer fabrication processes to deliver new InP-based products, including coherent and direct detection photonic components
  • Optimize existing wafer fab processes to improve yield, cost, and cycle time
  • Develop and maintain process flows and documentation within the MES system
  • Monitor and evaluate product performance throughout the development cycle
  • Use analytical tools (e.g., SEM) to investigate and improve process performance
  • Develop new process modules and ensure scalability for high-volume manufacturing
  • Support the transfer of new processes and products into production
  • Apply Six Sigma methodologies (e.g., FMEA, capability analysis, design for manufacturability/yield) for process and product improvement
  • Present process data and statistical analyses to support manufacturability decisions
  • Act as the key interface between design, operations engineering, and manufacturing teams
  • Serve as the process expert for products, including post-transfer support in production

Skills and Experience

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree in Physics, Physical Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field (relevant industry experience may be considered in lieu). Applications welcome from fresh Phd candidates
  • Hands-on experience with semiconductor wafer processing techniques, ideally in III-V materials
  • Knowledge in several of the following areas:
    • Epitaxy
    • Lithography
    • Wet and dry etching
    • Dielectric and metal deposition
    • Ion implantation and diffusion
  • Experience in process integration and development of process flows
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to manage complex engineering activities

Desirable Experience

  • Knowledge of direct bandgap semiconductor materials
  • Experience in a semiconductor manufacturing or wafer fab environment

Key Competencies

  • Strong analytical and scientific reasoning skills
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis tools (e.g., JMP)
  • Effective team collaboration and organizational abilities
  • Technical leadership and ownership mindset
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
