About the Position

Volunteers play a vital role in advancing the mission of Maricopa County Animal Care & Control (MCACC), which is to engage and empower a dedicated volunteer force that enhances animal care and serves the community. Their contributions are essential to creating a positive, enriching environment for the animals in our care.

The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for recruiting, onboarding, and retaining volunteers to support all aspects of MCACC’s operations. This role involves assigning volunteers to appropriate work areas, ensuring they understand the organizational structure, and providing them with the tools, training, and support needed for success. The position is fully in-person and requires a strong customer service presence during all working hours.

We Require

  • One year of work experience in coordinating volunteer or community programs, or other related program development experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Business, Marketing, or a closely related field

  • Job-related experience may substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis

Other Requirements

Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record by the time of hire

  • Experience in animal sheltering

  • Familiarity with Volgistics, Trello, Chameleon, and similar tracking and reporting software

Job Contributions

  • Assists in the advancement and refinement of the volunteer program for Animal Care & Control

  • Mentors, coaches, and disciplines volunteers if necessary

  • Develops and administers a volunteer recognition program

  • Communicates with volunteers via phone, e-mail, newsletter, etc.   

  • Recommends revisions to volunteer policies, processes, and expectations

  • Updates the volunteer database and generates reports detailing volunteer activities  

  • Meets with division managers to determine volunteer needs, coordinate assignments, and address problems

  • Assists in creating and updating volunteer job descriptions, training protocols, and other related program materials

  • Coordinates public dog field trips, including dog selection, handling, participant education, and program recordkeeping

  • Assists as needed with on and off-site events related to either the recruitment of volunteers or the use of volunteers in large numbers, including group volunteer inquiries and events, which include businesses, schools, and other partnerships

Working Conditions

  • Ability to lift 30lbs, bend, and walk

  • May be subject to extreme temperatures, wetness/humidity, respiratory hazards, and noise and vibration

  • This position works in a busy, often noisy, office setting within an animal shelter, with the ability to be around animals (dogs and cats), exposure to cleaning products used in animal shelters, and the smells associated with animal housing

  • While performing this job's duties, the employee is expected to spend time around the shelters, in the field, stand, and walk on all types of surfaces, sometimes slippery, rough, and/or uneven
