How Youโ€™ll Contribute

The Supervising Engineer is responsible for the day-to-day operations and maintenance program during the assigned shift. Also responsible for the supervision, motivation, and discipline of the 3 employees assigned to this shift. The shift handles demands for all after hour functions of the Society such as temperature, lighting, power or any other requirement the function may have. The shift leader will know all building systems, hours of operations for the various systems, ability to program systems via our EMS, able to handle multiple situations in a professional manner. Additional responsibilities are to provide technical, administrative, operational and supervisory support to the Chief and Assistant Chief engineer. The person in this position is considered essential personnel. The shift for this role is 2pm - 10:30pm Monday through Friday.

Responsibilities Include

  • Operate and monitor all building mechanical, electrical and life safety systems as required during the shift and keep a written account of the shifts activities. (50%)

  • Assist as needed with all after hour functions of the Society, including programming of equipment via the EMS, adjusting time clocks for lighting, responding to any other demands or concerns the function may have. (10%)

  • Oversee and ensure the maintenance program assigned to this shift is completed in a professional and timely manner, diagnosing problems, recommending and or ordering the necessary components to keep the equipment operating in an as new state. Additionally, oversee the refrigerant maintenance and repair program and the refrigerant inventory room. Act as a liaison between the shift engineers and the Assistant Chief to improve communications between the 3 shifts and the office. (25%)

  • Perform testing, operations and maintenance of mechanical and life safety systems as required by either law or manufacturers recommendations. Perform the required daily testing and adjusting of water treatment systems assigned to the shift. (5%)

  • Administrative duties include daily logs of equipment operations, written account of the shift activities, work order and PM documentation and closeout, research and reference of equipment OEM records and maintenance practices, perform periodic and annual performance reviews of personnel assigned to this shift. Also, continuous review of all building systems looking for any areas where improvements/ enhancements resulting in conservation of utilities can be made. (10%)

Minimum Education Required

A high school graduate with extensive continuing education in the fields of engineering and maintenance either from community college, trade or technical schools or the National Association of Power Engineers Education Foundation. A 3rd class District of Columbia Steam Operators license and Universal CFC certification is required. A minimum of 24 hours per year of continuing education in the engineering field is a job requirement.

Minimum Years and Type of Experience

Proven supervisory skills and 7 to 10 years of hands-on experience are required.

Knowledge and Skills Required

This person will have extensive practical experience in the areas of HVAC, steam boilers, centrifugal chillers, refrigeration systems, VAV and variable frequency drives, energy management systems, fire alarm and fire suppression systems, water treatment systems and practices, packaged AC units, commercial food service equipment and all other systems necessary for providing a first-class working environment in a class A office complex. Must have computer skills and knowledge of standard Microsoft software programs. Must have good oral and written communication skills.

The salary range for this position accounts for a wide range of factors including but not limited to organizational need; specific skill sets; experience and training; certifications; and more. At the National Geographic Society, individuals are typically hired at or near the starting point of the salary range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.

The hourly range for this position is $49.40 - $52.00. Employees in positions who are assigned to a shift that starts or ends between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. are entitled to shift differential pay of 10% of base pay for the hours worked between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Job Designation

On-Site - Staff members who spend 100% of work time on-site at Base Camp, supporting overall campus and museum operations. On-Site staff shifts (spread over seven days a week and 24 hours a day, including holidays) are scheduled by their supervisors and determined by team needs and may be adjusted based on cyclical work cycles and ebbs and flows of work throughout the year.
