Database Administrator
About this role
The Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for the design, implementation, performance optimization, monitoring, and operational management of enterprise database platforms, with a primary focus on IBM DB2 (AIX/Linux) environments. This role ensures the availability, integrity, security, and performance of mission-critical databases supporting core business applications.
The DBA will also contribute to SQL Server environments and support modernization initiatives, compliance alignment (HITRUST, NIST, SOC2), and hybrid infrastructure evolution.
Responsibilities:
• Administer DB2 databases across AIX/Linux environments.
• Manage DB2 on IBM Power Systems (PowerVM LPARs).
• Perform installation, configuration, patching, and upgrades.
• Manage schemas, tablespaces, indexes.
• Ensure high availability and adherence to SLA compliance.
Performance & Tuning:
• Optimize SQL, buffer pools, memory, I/O, and locking mechanisms.
• Execute RUNSTATS and analyze EXPLAIN plans for performance improvements.
Monitoring & SIEM:
• Implement and manage monitoring tools (PRTG, Rapid7, and native DB2 tools).
• Integrate database logs with SIEM platforms (Rapid7).
• Monitor system health: CPU, memory, disk, locking, and query performance.
Capacity Management:
• Manage storage utilization and tablespace growth.
• Perform capacity planning and forecasting.
• Optimize memory structures (e.g., buffer pools, sort heap).
• Manage PowerVM resource allocation.
Backup & Recovery:
- Manage backup and restore processes.
• Ensure disaster recovery readiness and conduct regular testing.
Security & Compliance:
• Implement RBAC, encryption, and auditing controls.
• Support compliance efforts (HITRUST, NIST, SOC2).
Modernization:
• Support migrations (AIX → Linux, cloud environments).
• Work with OpenShift and container platforms.
• Contribute to ongoing database modernization efforts.
SQL Server Support:
• Provide performance tuning, backups, and routine maintenance for SQL server.
Requirements:
- 7+ years of experience with DB2.
- Hands-on experience with DB2on Power Systems (PowerVMLPARs).
- Strong expertise in SQL performance tuning and optimization.
- Experience with shell scripting (Bash and/or KornShell).
- Working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server.
- Familiarity with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL).
- Exposure to OpenShift and/or Kubernetes.
- Experience supporting or integrating with SIEM solutions.
- Background in platform modernization initiatives.
- Experience working in healthcare or other regulated environments.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical thinking.
- Proven performance troubleshooting expertise.
- High level of attention to detail
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to perform effectively in critical, high-pressure environments.
