Job Summary:

The Department of Criminology, Sociology and Justice Studies is looking for affiliate faculty to teach introductory courses in sociology and criminology in person in both the Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 semesters. The fall term runs from August 24, to December 13, 2026, and the spring term runs from January 11, to May 2, 2027. The classes to be taught include CSJ 200: Introduction to Sociology and CSJ 201: Introduction to Criminology.

Introduction to Sociology introduces the sociological study of society, analyzes connections between personal lives and the broader social world, and applies sociological thinking to understand and challenge injustice, and to promote social change. Introduction to Sociology will be offered in the fall semester on MW 12:30 – 1:45 pm; and in the spring semester on TR 9:30 – 10:45 am.

Introduction to Criminology Introduces the study of crime as a social phenomenon and critically analyzes how society defines and responds to crime, including social, political, and economic forces shaping criminalization and the U.S. punishment system (e.g., police, courts, prisons). Introduction to Criminology will be offered in the spring semester on TR 12:30 – 1:45 pm.  

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • For traditional, in-person courses, the requirements are to meet in-person with the class twice when scheduled and hold 1 hour of office hours per week. Faculty will participate in designing their own course (in consultation with the chair of the department).

  • For post-traditional, remote courses, the requirements are to deliver recorded virtual lectures, actively engage with student posts on the discussion board, respond to student questions, and provide feedback and grade assignments. Faculty hold 1 ½ virtual office hours per week. A completed course shell and syllabus are provided.

Minimum Qualifications: Master’s Degree in Sociology, Criminology, or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Sociology, Criminology, or related field.

  • Teaching experience

This position is benefits-eligible for workers’ compensation and will receive 1 hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum of 48 hours per year.
