Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Part-Time/Fractional Instrumentation and Control Engineer to join our dynamic team and support the FEED, detailed design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and operations of VulcanX’s hydrogen production plants. As an integral member of the team, you will have the opportunity to be involved in the instrumentation and control of this novel technology. The ideal candidate will have 5-10 years of industrial experience in chemical plant design, with a strong background in pressurized systems, high-temperature hydrocarbon pyrolysis, corrosive environments, and a deep understanding of hydrogen systems.

 

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including other engineering disciplines, operations, maintenance, and quality assurance, to ensure seamless project delivery.
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills to effectively liaise with VulcanX’s leadership team, stakeholders, clients, and regulatory bodies.
  • Develop piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) and implement project specifications
  • Assist in project scheduling and development of engineering and capital cost estimates
  • Prepare technical specifications, instrument data sheets, requisition quotes, and bid evaluations
  • Perform instrument design calculations
  • Configure reports and update and maintain instrument databases
  • Check and review vendor drawings against industry codes and standards to ensure technical accuracy
  • Design control panels, IO drawings, and communication networks
  • Design junction box wiring, location diagrams, and cable schedule
  • Prepare control narratives and philosophy documents, as well as written scopes of work for instrument and control contractors
  • Prepare shutdown keys/cause and effect matrices
  • Program, commission, and startup various types of control systems
  • Uphold the highest standards of professionalism, reliability, and ethical conduct in all aspects of the role.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (preferably graduate) in Instrumentation and Controls, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, or Applied Sciences
  • Certified Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Alberta (APEGA).
  • 5-10 years of relevant work experience in the oil and gas industry, and chemical process design, with a focus on pressurized systems and high-temperature hydrocarbon pyrolysis
  • Minimum 3 years of work experience in EPC companies is an asset.
  • Process safety and functional safety (IEC 61511) is an asset.
  • Strong ability to track progress and prepare status reports.
  • Ability to use judgment to solve problems based on engineering guidelines and procedures
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a high degree of professionalism
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Ability to perform and complete multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Proficiency with engineering software (Microsoft Office, AVEVA, Elecdes, InTools, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, etc.)
  • PLC, DCS, HMI, RTU, SCADA programming proficiency is an asset (Allen-Bradley, DeltaV, GE, Modicon, ABB 800XA, Honeywell Experion/PKS, etc.)
  • Familiarity with engineering codes and standards (CEC, CSA Z662, ASME B31.3, ASME B31.8, etc.)
  • Required to occasional travel to the field for project scoping, commissioning, and as-building
  • Knowledge of project management principles and management of change is an asset.
