About the Brand  

The goal of the Publishing Performance and Intelligence Group (PP&I) is to help deliver next generation digital publishing at Springer Nature and, as a result, grow the number of published articles, especially in Open Access (OA). Working closely with the Journals Group, Production, Technology, Marketing and Customer Services, we contribute to a wide variety of support work. This includes increasing the number of transfers of articles between journals, the commissioning of new collections and strengthening editor engagement, as well as supporting and enhancing the end-to-end publishing process 

About the Role

As Research Integrity Partner Manager, you will be part of the growing Resolutions team in RIG. This is a brand-new role, in which you will be responsible for working with third parties that we have contracted to help investigate and resolve research integrity concerns in the published record, largely related to image integrity and data integrity concerns. You will be leading the new Research Integrity Partner arm of the team, working together with contracted parties to make sure that they deliver on the goals we have set for them while maintaining quality, to ensure that cases are investigated and managed in line with the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

This is a hybrid role based in Dordrecht, London or Pune. These locations support effective collaboration with the team and aligns with business needs. 

Role Responsibilities 

  • Manage, coach, and develop the Research Integrity Partner Advisers, manage their workloads, provide support, training and guidance in difficult cases; act as an escalation point for particularly complicated cases 
  • Oversee research integrity case work carried out by a partner (third-party vendor), ensuring it is conducted appropriately, consistently and in line with editorial best practice (e.g., COPE) and Springer Nature policies, and aligned with how integrity cases are handled across the Research Integrity team 
  • Manage escalations from the partner (third-party vendor) into the Research Integrity team, including cases that require input from the legal and communications departments 
  • Monitor performance and quality across the partner (third-party vendor) case work and the Partner Adviser quality-control activity; identify trends and gaps for continuous improvement. Maintain regular operational catch-ups with the partner (third-party vendor) to review day-to-day operations, discuss issues and escalations, and agree improvements to consistency, quality and efficiency 
  • Responsibility for the professional and personal development of Research Integrity Partner Advisers, identifying development opportunities and necessary training 
  • Responsibility for the recruitment of new team members (including Partner Advisers) by selection of potential candidates and conducting job interviews, liaising with Human Resources 
  • Oversee the project management and progress of cases processed by the partner (third-party vendor), ensuring cases are driven towards resolution following Standard Operating Procedures and meeting Key Performance Indicators, with appropriate quality control and milestone sign-off by Partner Advisers (e.g., recommendations for editorial action such as retraction and draft retraction notices) 
  • Work with all stakeholders (for example, senior management and the communications and legal teams) to resolve complicated integrity issues 
  • Carefully manage and resolve conflict situations between stakeholders on a research integrity case 
  • Be an expert contributor for training materials on publication ethics for staff and external editors and run training (in-person or via webinar) on publication ethics and research integrity 
  • Initiate, project manage and contribute to other tasks and projects related to ensuring compliance with ethical policies/guidelines and improving workflows 
  • Represent SNRIG externally and promote its work, (e.g. writing blog posts, attending industry events and editorial board meetings, liaising with governmental organizations) 

Skills, Experience & Qualifications:  

Experience:

  • Relevant years of experience in a similar role 
  • Educated to at least a graduate level in an academic field, with knowledge/experience of the publishing industry 
  • A good understanding of publication and research ethics concepts and familiarity with the academic publication process 
  • Line management experience 
  • Drive your professional development by seeking out training opportunities to further your and the team’s goals and objectives 

Skills

  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with senior and junior stakeholders both internally and externally 
  • A high level of computer literacy, including Office applications and Google Workspace 
  • Dynamism; ability to work well under high pressure and to reprioritize 'on the fly'; willingness to take responsibility for difficult decisions 
  • Familiarity with plagiarism detection software (CrossCheck/iThenticate) and image integrity software (Proofig, ImageTwin) 
  • Familiarity with copyright law 
  • An understanding of libel and defamation concepts 
  • Ability to travel 
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills 
  • Analytical skills 
  • Proactive approach to problem-solving in both daily tasks and more complex troubleshooting 
  • Strong communication skills (written and oral) 
  • Excellent English language skills 

Qualification:

Post-graduate with research experience
