Reporting to the Manager, the Electrical Compliance Engineer is a high-impact role supporting Suncor’s Oilsands Operations. You’ll provide expertise in electrical regulatory compliance, with a focus on Alberta Reliability Standards (ARS) Operations and Planning requirements and ISO Rules for Suncor’s power generation and transmission assets.

Working across business units, you’ll help drive audit readiness, support regulatory engagement, manage compliance evidence, and contribute to the reliability of Alberta’s Bulk Electric System (BES). Minimum Requirements: 

  • Degree in electrical engineering and registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA, or equivalent experience/training. 
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in the electricity or utility industry. 
  • Knowledge of Alberta Interconnected Electric System (AIES) operations. 
  • Previous experience in a compliance role involving AESO, MSA, AUC and/or NERC requirements and Alberta Risk-Based Compliance Monitoring Program and the MSA’s compliance process. 
  • Experience with high-voltage electrical systems, protection systems, and related rules and standards. 
  • Experience identifying and assessing compliance-related events, conducting root cause analysis, and supporting implementation of corrective actions. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, particularly Excel, Word, SharePoint, and Power BI. 
  • Demonstrated willingness to adopt technologies that improve compliance efficiency, such as ServiceNow, Enablon, or similar systems.

Responsibilities: 

  • Lead activities that support Suncor’s compliance with ARS O&P requirements and ISO Rules by maintaining accurate, organized, and audit-defensible evidence. 
  • Act as team lead for AESO O&P compliance audits and self-certifications, including preparing, collecting, validating, and submitting evidence to AESO. 
  • Coordinate with external auditors and regulatory bodies during compliance audits, assessments, and information requests. 
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with AESO and MSA and provide input on new ISO Rule and ARS O&P Standard consultations. 
  • Prepare self-reports and mitigation plans for submission to the MSA, with a focus on preventing recurrence of compliance-related events. 
  • Establish effective working relationships with internal and external partners to track follow-up actions, including mitigation plans and regulatory compliance controls, through to completion. 
  • Work collaboratively with asset owners to develop, implement, and sustain business processes, procedures, and internal controls supporting O&P reliability standards and ISO Rule compliance. 
  • Monitor internal controls to confirm they are in place, effective, and aligned with regulatory expectations. 
  • Communicate regularly with internal stakeholders to enhance O&P and ISO Rule awareness and provide guidance on compliance questions. 
  • Provide training and guidance to Suncor business units on O&P and ISO Rule compliance requirements and procedures. 
  • Participate in risk assessments and support development of mitigation plans to address identified compliance risks. 
  • Contribute to monthly electrical compliance stewardship reporting and KPI development. 

Location and Other Key Details: 

  • You will work out of our Calgary head office located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave SW. 
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs. 
  • Some business travel required, approximately 10-15%. 
  • Our business professional roles follow internal compensation guidelines and the pay band will generally be based years of experience and scope of work.
