In this dynamic role, you will represent Suncor as a Director Risk, you will lead the trading mid-office work, located in Houston, Texas. You will be responsible for managing risk control for oil trading (i.e. people management, adherence to Suncor trading policy and procedures). You will also be responsible for driving consistent risk control processes across crude and products trading.

Minimum Requirements:

  • 15–20 years of overall experience in energy trading, risk control, product control, or middle-office roles, including at least 10 years of hands-on crude and refined products risk control experience and demonstrated people leadership
  • Expert understanding of the trade lifecycle, including deal capture, valuation, exposure reporting, P&L, limits, controls, settlements handoffs, and related governance
  • Deep knowledge of physical and financial crude and refined products markets, including North American and international pricing, fundamentals, tariffs, pipeline systems, terminals, marine logistics, and transportation economics
  • Strong working knowledge of trading risk management systems, valuation platforms, market data, reporting tools, and control automation opportunities
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional initiatives, manage change, and deliver process/control improvements across Front Office, Middle Office, Back Office, Finance, Compliance, and Audit stakeholders
  • Ability to apply commercial and economic analysis to support operational improvements, risk decisions, governance enhancements, and strategic opportunities
  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder-management skills, with the ability to influence at all levels of the organization and build trust with commercial teams

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the continuous improvement of trading risk control practices for crude, refined products and marine trading, with oversight of middle-office staff in Houston, Texas and London, England
  • Provide leadership for the end-to-end middle-office risk control framework, including valuation, exposure, P&L, limit monitoring, governance, and escalation processes
  • Partner with Front Office, Back Office, Finance, Compliance, Audit, and other stakeholders to identify risk blind spots and ensure controls evolve with the growth and complexity of trading activity
  • Set clear middle office expectations and build a strong culture of compliance, accountability, and continuous improvement across middle-office teams and geographies
  • Develop, coach, and support middle-office staff through day-to-day leadership, training, performance expectations, and succession development
  • Ensure risk control processes appropriately address the implications of trading activity across Front Office, Middle Office, and Back Office, including changes driven by new activities, market expansion, systems, or internal audit recommendations
  • Advise the Director, Market & Trade Risk Management on governance, risk management initiatives, audit findings, control enhancements, and adoption of new or revised trading risk processes

Location and other Key Details:

  • You will work out of the Houston office, located at 2 Allen Centre, 1200 Smith St
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs
