About this role
English Adventure, Japan's leader in English-language outdoor programs, is hiring for our upcoming Summer Camp 2026!
English Adventure staff are some of the biggest reasons that kids become Happy Campers, and want to come back to camp again and again. Your enthusiasm and caring can help create an experience that kids will remember for the rest of their lives. We are seeking hard-working, fun, and energetic English-speaking staff of any nationality who enjoy working with children. Please note that English Adventure is a 100% nonsmoking workplace.
The Team Leader/Camp Counselor
- will lead a group of about 8 campers through various camp activities including wake up and bedtimes, mealtimes, camp activity time and free time
- is aware of their campers' emotional and social needs and will provide attention to each individual camper
- will supervise campers to ensure their entire camp experience is safe, fun, and memorable
- will address behavioural issues that arise in their team such as homesickness or aggression
- is also expected to stay in rooms with campers at night
Basic qualifications
- Age 18 or older
- Available for all training and all camp days
- Childcare, youth work or educational experience
- Flexible, able to work under pressure
- A strong desire to help kids have a blast and make the most of their camp experience
Pluses, but not requirements
- Teacher or youth work certification
- Previous experience working with kids in a camp environment
- Japanese language ability
- Teaching/leadership experience in outdoor settings
- Current CPR/First Aid certification
- ESL qualification/experience for Challenge plus staff (ask our interviewers about Challenge plus!)
Summer Camp 2026 Schedule
- Onsite Training: July 17-20 (departure from Tokyo to the campsite on July 16 evening and return to Tokyo station on July 20)
- Camp Sessions 1-8: July 22 - August 23
- Hongo School Camp Session: August 25-28
- Remuneration: 10,000 yen per camp day and training day
- Location: Tsunan, Niigata
We will be running 8 sessions of 5-day camps throughout the summer period and the team leaders/camp counselors will work all of the odd or even numbered sessions. Most Team Leaders will return to Tokyo in between their working sessions. Overseas volunteers will return to accommodation in Nozawa onsen in between their working sessions.

Session 2: July 26 - 30
Session 4: August 3 - 7
Session 6: August 11 -15
Session 8: August 19 - 23
Staff Training
English Adventure will provide training prior to each camp. Attendance is mandatory for all staff. Our professional training is designed to make camps run smoothly, ensure the safety of our campers and staff, and will ensure you have the confidence necessary to have a great experience throughout the winter, spring or summer. Training days may differ based on the position.
IMPORTANT: For domestic staff, if you are holding a visa that requires special separate permission to work from Immigration (Instructor visa, Student visa and Dependent visa), please understand that you should obtain that before applying.
