Software Engineer
About this role
About the Job
The Red Hat IT Developer Enablement team is looking for a Platform Engineer (PE) based in India (Pune or Bangalore) to own and operate images.paas β Red Hat's central internal container image registry built on Red Hat Quay.
images.paas serves thousands of internal users across Red Hat, providing a secure, self-service registry for container images used in production, CI/CD pipelines, and development workflows. The platform is managed through a custom Kubernetes Operator written in Go and a GitOps-based configuration pipeline running on OpenShift on AWS.
You will be the primary PE for this service β responsible for its reliability, automation, and evolution. You will work within a small, globally distributed team that values openness, blameless learning, and sustainable operations. At Red Hat, your individual contributions have high visibility and directly impact the developer experience across the company.
What Will You Do
Own the day-to-day operations of the images.paas Quay registry, ensuring it meets its Service Level Objectives (SLOs)
Maintain and extend the images-paas-operator (Go / operator-sdk) that automates Quay organization, repository, and access management
Manage the GitOps pipeline that controls registry configuration, permissions, and organizational structure
Monitor service health, respond to incidents, and drive blameless postmortems to continuously improve reliability
Reduce operational toil through automation β if you do something twice, automate it the third time
Manage LDAP-based user authentication and access provisioning
Participate in an on-call rotation within a geographically distributed team for production support
Collaborate with internal stakeholders (platform teams, CI/CD teams, security) to support their registry needs
Provide feedback and bug reports to Red Hat Quay product engineering based on real-world operational experience
Contribute to capacity planning, disaster recovery procedures, and security compliance (SIA/PIA)
What Will You Bring
3+ years of experience operating production services on Kubernetes / OpenShift
2+ years of programming experience in Go
Hands-on experience with container registries (Quay, Harbor, Docker Registry, or similar)
Experience with GitOps workflows for managing infrastructure or application configuration
Solid understanding of Linux systems administration (RHEL/Fedora preferred)
Familiarity with AWS cloud infrastructure
Understanding of standard networking (TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP/TLS) and authentication protocols (LDAP)
Comfort with incident response, on-call responsibilities, and working across time zones
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while keeping the team informed
The Following Are Considered a Plus
Experience with the Operator SDK or building Kubernetes operators
Experience administering Red Hat Quay specifically
Familiarity with container image security scanning and vulnerability management
Experience with CI/CD pipelines and image build automation
Experience with monitoring and observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, alerting)
Knowledge of SRE principles β SLOs, error budgets, toil measurement
Experience with Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform
Contributions to open source projects
