About this role

Overview


RiverFlow Dredging is seeking a Watchkeeping Mate with a demonstrated ability to manage assigned duties promptly and efficiently. This position will be based on the RiverFlow Spirit, a trailing suction hopper dredger that will commence operations in the Fraser River in June 2026.


Duties & Responsibilities

The Watchkeeping Mate’s duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Taking charge of a navigation watch.
  • Handling / maneuvering / navigating the vessel.
  • Supervising the dredging operations and optimizing production and the continuity of the vessel.
  • Verifying the vessel’s position.
  • Entering all pertinent details into the Bridge Log, as they occur.
  • Checking operation of all navigational aids: radar, depth sounder, GPS, radios.
  • Monitoring depth of water when approaching land or dredging.
  • Maintaining a good lookout for traffic or dangers.
  • Giving sufficient traffic warning to other vessels and checking traffic conditions in confined and/or restricted areas.
  • Being responsible for all elements of the dredging operation.
  • Monitoring the stability characteristics of the vessel during the dredging operation.
  • Ensuring day shapes and navigation lights are properly displayed.

  • Certificate of Proficiency inSTCWBasic Safety
  • Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats
  • Certificate of Competency
    • Preferred–Watchkeeping Mate
    • Minimum–Watchkeeping Mate, Near Coastal
  • Certificate of Proficiency in Advance Fire Fighting
  • Certificate of Proficiency inMarine Advanced First Aid
  • Restricted Operator’s Certificate (Maritime Commercial) ROC-MC, minimum
  • Eligible to be added to Pacific Pilotage Authority Coastal Waiver from Compulsory Pilotage
  • Eligible to work in Canada


Working Conditions

  • 12-hour days with overtime as required
  • Unionized position with the Canadian Merchant Service Guild
