Position Overview
The Asphalt Raker is responsible for distributing, leveling, and finishing asphalt behind the paver to ensure proper depth, grade, and surface quality. This position is essential to achieving a smooth, uniform finished product.
Key Responsibilities
- Rake, shovel, and lute asphalt to maintain proper grade and thickness
- Work directly behind the paver to correct imperfections and ensure smooth transitions
- Assist with handwork around edges, structures, curbs, and tight areas
- Check and maintain proper slope, drainage, and joint alignment
- Communicate with paver operator, roller operators, and foreman to maintain workflow
- Remove excess material and fill low spots as needed
- Perform general labor duties including cleanup, sweeping, and site prep
- Follow all safety procedures and wear required PPE
Qualifications
- Previous asphalt or construction experience preferred
- Knowledge of asphalt paving techniques and hand tools (rakes, lutes, shovels)
- Ability to follow grade stakes and directions from supervisors
- Strong work ethic and ability to work as part of a team
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
Physical Requirements
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods
- Frequent bending, lifting, and standing
- Ability to lift 20+ lbs regularly
- Must be able to work in hot temperatures and outdoor conditions
