About this role

Position Overview

The Knowledge and Innovation Lawyer is responsible for working collaboratively with internal stakeholders (lawyers, students, and business service teams) to create and organize content, and to identify, evaluate and implement legal technology solutions, processes and workflows that create efficiencies and enhance client service delivery.

 

This is a one‑year contract position, with the possibility of extension.

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide ongoing coaching and support to internal stakeholders on the availability and use of practice management tools and resources.
  • Become an expert in the core processes and technologies supported by Knowledge and Innovation.
  • Create, organize and maintain knowledge products and knowledge sites for specific practice areas.
  • Research prior knowledge databases and collate, curate and catalogue knowledge content for re-use.
  • Draft and maintain model agreements, memos, checklists, legal playbooks, presentations and other supporting transaction documents as needed.
  • Develop project plans including communication strategies, detailed timelines and processes to evaluate project success and make improvements. Oversee the execution of projects to ensure work is aligned with the scope of work and key objectives.
  • Develop user documentation and training materials for new and existing knowledge products, legal processes and technologies.
  • Develop and deliver training, guidance and best‑practice resources to support lawyers and business services teams in the use of AI tools and technologies.
  • Deliver legal training programs to internal stakeholders and clients on key legal developments and trends.
  • Support end-users in leveraging AI systems by tailoring tools to specific use cases and designing workflows for optimal results.
  • Leverage deep technical skills to develop advanced legal technology solutions using a wide variety of applications and tools including generative AI.
  • Lead change management initiatives to drive adoption of legal technology solutions,including working with Learning & Development team to develop training programs, communicate benefits to stakeholders, and proactively address resistance or barriers.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to design and develop original solutions to legal issues, using a combination of process and technology.
  • Stay current on emerging legal technologies and industry trends and evaluate their potential impact on the firm and our clients.
  • Liaise with software vendors to evaluate products, coordinate demos, training, support and manage ongoing relationships. When required, negotiate terms of contracts and oversee work performed by vendors to ensure they adhere to the terms and service level agreements.

Attributes & Experience

  • An LLB or JD degree with an excellent academic record from a reputable law school.
  • 4+ years’ experience practicing law in a large Canadian law firm environment or reputable in-house environment. Practicing in a legal generalist role is an asset.
  • Demonstrated interest in innovation, legal technology and emerging AI tools, with a demonstrated willingness to learn new technologies.
  • A high level of comfort with law firm technology including proficiency in MS Office product suite - Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and Word and a willingness to develop new technology proficiencies.
  • Strong business acumen and analytical skills, with a creative, strategic, and forward-thinking mindset.
  • Superior legal and business research skills with an ability to provide clear and authoritative analysis on complex legal issues.
  • Excellent writing and legal drafting skills.
  • Confident and effective communication style using various media.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with an effective, engaging and thought-provoking presentation style.
  • Enthusiastic, resilient and proactive attitude, and an ability to work independently and diplomatically.
  • Excellent client service combined with the ability to manage multiple client needs at the same time.
  • Strong project management skills combined with exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to train/guide all users, including senior leaders, in their use of evolving information sources.
  • A keen interest and aptitude for technology and exploring, understanding and troubleshooting new software applications and their applicability to a range of legal challenges.
  • Strong collaboration and consultation skills. Ability to effectively move people towards mutually agreeable outcomes; promoting teamwork.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (written, oral and presentation) skills.
  • Ability to work outside of regular working hours and travel periodically.

Additional information

HybridThis position is part of our hybrid work model with 3 days in the office per week. As part of our onboarding, new hires are required to be in the office more often for the first few months of employment to ensure they receive the requisite cross training.
