GFT is seeking an experienced Resident Engineer – Transit and Rail to join our Construction Services team in New Jersey. This role presents an exciting opportunity to be an important part of critical construction efforts for large-scale transit and rail projects in New Jersey.Â

What you’ll be challenged to do:Â
As a Resident Engineer, you will oversee all construction work on assigned projects and coordinate field coverage as needed. You will keep the client informed of field activities and progress, supervise field personnel, review daily reports, and guide the field team. You will communicate with office staff, review Site Specific Safety Work Plans (SSSWPs), Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), Construction Work Plans (CWPs), Quality Work Plans (QWPs), and other submittals. You will attend meetings in person and work directly with the Client and Project team members to resolve issues.Â

What you will bring to our firm:Â
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related fieldÂ
- Professional Engineer license is preferredÂ
- Experience with NJ Transit, Port Authority of NY & NJ, NJDOT, or NJTAÂ
- 10+ years of experience in Rail RE activities and managing construction field teamsÂ
- Experience with catenary systemsÂ
- Experience with rail facilitiesÂ
- Candidate must have the ability to driveÂ
- OSHA 30-hour safety course certification requiredÂ
- Work schedule must be flexible to accommodate varying shifts (day, evening, weekend)Â
- Familiarity with Project Management Procedures (PMP’s) and Project Management Guidelines (PMG’s) is a plus.Â
What you will bring to our firm:
- Managing daily observation of contractor operations for rail-related transportation projects across New Jersey and the broader tri-state regionÂ
- Serving as the field point of contact for the client and project stakeholdersÂ
- Supervising field staff, including inspectors, community liaison, and office engineerÂ
- Reviewing and verifying construction schedules, including baseline and updates, in coordination with the clientÂ
- Performing inspections and observing field testing and commissioningÂ
- Assisting with preparation and negotiation of change orders and project reportingÂ
- Reviewing contractor payment vouchers, manning reports, payroll certifications, and labor documentationÂ
- Leading project progress meetings and issuing meeting minutesÂ
- Overseeing site safety, permit compliance, and coordination with adjacent projectsÂ
- Monitoring contractor compliance with safety and health plans and approved quality plansÂ
- Working with contractors to minimize public disruptionÂ
- Coordinating responses to RFIs, submittals, and shop drawings with design teamsÂ
- Preparing punch lists with the owner at project completionÂ
- Addressing project challenges related to schedule and budget in collaboration with the owner, GFT, and contractorsÂ
- Handling project management responsibilities including staffing oversight, budget tracking, cost-to-complete analysis, and maintaining project recordsÂ
- Reviewing project documents to resolve construction and design issues and preparing correspondence and reportsÂ
- Using spreadsheets, databases, and scheduling tools to support project deliveryÂ
- Communicating with all key stakeholders throughout the project lifecycleÂ
What we prefer you bring:
- Experience with airport projects.
- Certifications such as Rutgers TCC, NJSAT, ACI (preferred).
Compensation:
The salary range for this role is $155,000 - $220,000 per year. Salary is dependent upon experience and geographic location.
