Seasonal Utility Maintenance Worker

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM

Job Length: Up to six months

Pay: Starting at $19.75/hour

Job Location: 1415 S. Robinson Street, Olathe, Kansas

Do you like being active and working outside? Are you a skilled maintenance worker in construction or are you interested in on the job training in a skilled trade? The City of Olathe is currently recruiting for Seasonal Utility Maintenance Workers. As a Utility Maintenance Worker, you would perform semi-skilled and skilled work in the construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of the city's water distribution and wastewater collection system. 

What does a Utility Maintenance Worker do?

  • Perform a variety of duties, such as hand excavation, heavy lifting, hauling materials, operating tools and equipment, furnishing tools, materials, and supplies to other workers; participates in the repair and preventive maintenance of water distribution systems. This position performs the more routine tasks and duties assigned in potentially dangerous and hazardous conditions under the direct supervision of others.

  • Perform work in preventive and breakdown maintenance on pumps, mixers, motors, valves, meters, water and wastewater lines, instrumentation, and other related devices of assigned facilities.

  • Maintain safety and proper operation according to City regulation in all jobs performed.

  • Maintain traffic control of work sites by directing and guiding traffic and the placement of signs and devices to ensure a safe job site environment.

  • Operate a variety of equipment including trucks, snowplows, salt spreader, hand tools, power tools, lawn equipment, electronic test meters, pumps, and various other vehicles and equipment.

  • Monitor, review, and inspect all utility lines with the proper equipment; maintain inspection equipment as required.

  • Participate in housekeeping duties, grounds and building maintenance; perform troubleshooting, repair and replacement duties for electrical and mechanical breakdowns.

  • Perform on-call duties and overtime as required.

What You Need:

  • Experience: No experience is required.

  • Education: High School diploma/GED and the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.

  • Licenses: Must have a current valid driver's license and favorable driving record. Seasonal Utility Maintenance Workers will have the opportunity to participate in the City of Olathe's CDL Training program. 

  • Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions, with the physical ability for prolonged lifting, walking, bending, stooping, and kneeling.

The Utility Maintenance Worker I performs entry-level maintenance work in the construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of the City's water distribution and wastewater collection system. They complete a variety of more routine tasks and duties from providing supplies to other workers to participating in the repair and preventive maintenance of water-distribution systems requiring potentially dangerous and hazardous conditions under the direct supervision of others. This is the first level in a three-level career progression of Utilities Maintenance Worker I, II, and III.

Key Responsibilities

  • Performs more routine work in preventive and breakdown maintenance for pumps, mixers, motors, valves, meters, water and wastewater lines, instrumentation, and other related devices of assigned facilities with direct supervision; monitors, reviews, and inspects utility lines with the proper equipment; maintains inspection equipment; participates in housekeeping duties, grounds and building maintenance; performs troubleshooting, repair and replacement duties for electrical and mechanical breakdowns.

  • Maintains safety and proper operation according to City regulation in all jobs performed including trench and confined space precautions; maintains traffic control of work sites by directing and guiding traffic and the placement of signs and devices to ensure a safe jobsite environment; works safely and collaboratively with other employees in the completion of work assignments.

  • Operates a variety of equipment and vehicles including trucks, snowplows, salt spreader, hand tools, power tools, lawn equipment, electronic test meters, pumps, and various other vehicles and equipment.

  • Performs regular emergency duties, including frequent nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime hours as required to respond to emergency maintenance; participates in an on-call rotation.

Qualifications

Experience:   No experience is required.

Education:  A high school diploma or equivalent is required along with the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance. 

Licenses & Certifications:   A valid driver's license and favorable driving record are required. A class A commercial driver's license with air brake and tanker endorsement is required within six months of employment.

Environmental or Physical Demands:   Utility Maintenance Workers perform their job duties outside in all types of weather and are exposed to conditions including sun, wind, rain, snow, ice, pollen, dust, fumes, sanitary waste, and other allergens or airborne particles.  They will work in confined spaces and trenches. They are exposed to noise from traffic and equipment.  They must be able to perform physical activities that require considerable use of one’s arms and legs moving one’s whole body to lift, balance, walk, twist, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl while handling or carrying materials.  They will operate a variety of hand and power tools, powered equipment, and commercial vehicles. They may drive or ride from site-to-site multiple times throughout the workday.  Must be able to work safely in distracting situations including high volume traffic areas.
