About this role

Help Build the Infrastructure That Connects Communities

At Fibersmith, we help telecom providers expand high-speed internet access through smart engineering, strong project execution, and practical broadband design solutions. Our work supports the networks that connect homes, businesses, schools, and communities across the country.

We’re looking for a licensed Professional Engineer to join our team. Broadband experience is helpful, but it is not required. If you are a licensed PE with strong engineering judgment, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn the broadband industry, we can train you on the fiber-specific tools, standards, and processes used in our work.

This role is a great fit for someone who enjoys solving technical problems, reviewing plans and specifications, working with clients, and helping bring complex infrastructure projects from concept to construction.

Position Overview

As a Professional Engineer at Fibersmith, you’ll perform advanced engineering work related to broadband network projects, including plan review, design support, specifications, cost estimates, project documentation, and construction-related guidance.

You’ll work with internal project teams, design consultants, clients, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure engineering deliverables are accurate, complete, and aligned with project requirements. While prior fiber or telecom knowledge is a plus, the most important requirement is that you bring a strong engineering foundation and an active Professional Engineer license.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Engineering Design & Review

  • Review and support engineering plans, specifications, drawings, and project documentation.
  • Learn and utilize broadband design tools and platforms such as 3GIS, ESRI, AutoCAD, and related systems.
  • Support the development of broadband network designs, including fiber routes, construction plans, and related deliverables.
  • Conduct engineering calculations, technical reviews, and design evaluations to support project accuracy and feasibility.
  • Assist with the integration of various project elements, including design, permitting, construction requirements, and client standards.

Feasibility, Cost Modeling & Project Support

  • Support feasibility studies, cost estimates, project planning, and troubleshooting efforts.
  • Review survey reports, maps, blueprints, construction drawings, and other technical documents.
  • Help identify design challenges, field constraints, and potential project risks.
  • Provide recommendations to improve design accuracy, constructability, and project outcomes.

Contracts, Specifications & Documentation

  • Assist with the preparation of plans, specifications, contract documents, and cost estimates.
  • Review project documentation for completeness, accuracy, and alignment with client expectations.
  • Maintain clear and accurate engineering records, reports, and project files.
  • Submit timesheets, expenses, and other required administrative documentation in a timely manner.

Client & Project Team Communication

  • Participate in client meetings, project reviews, pre-bid meetings, pre-construction meetings, and coordination calls.
  • Communicate technical information clearly to clients, contractors, project managers, and internal team members.
  • Provide engineering guidance and support to Project Managers, Senior Design Consultants, and other internal staff.
  • Present project concepts, technical findings, or recommendations as needed.

Construction & Technical Support

  • Provide engineering support during construction planning and execution.
  • Assist with technical questions related to field conditions, construction drawings, and project requirements.
  • Learn broadband-specific construction practices, including fiber placement, splicing documentation, and outside plant design considerations.
  • Advise leadership and project teams on design, construction, and program modifications as needed.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Stay open to learning new tools, technologies, standards, and broadband engineering practices.
  • Support company and project objectives through other related duties as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications

Required

  • Active Professional Engineer License in any engineering discipline.
  • Strong engineering judgment and ability to apply technical knowledge to real-world infrastructure projects.
  • Accuracy, attention to detail, clarity, and thoroughness in all work.
  • Ability to review technical plans, drawings, reports, maps, and specifications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-directed, proactive, and willing to take ownership of assigned work.
  • Professional demeanor when working with clients, contractors, vendors, and co-workers.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Willingness to travel to job sites as assigned.

Preferred, But Not Required

  • Experience with broadband, telecommunications, fiber optic networks, FTTH, utilities, civil infrastructure, electrical infrastructure, or construction-related engineering.
  • Familiarity with fiber optic technology, GPON, EPON, outside plant construction, or splicing documentation.
  • Experience with 3GIS, ESRI, AutoCAD, or similar design/mapping tools.
  • Experience with feasibility studies, cost modeling, construction plans, specifications, or contract documents.

No Broadband Experience? That’s Okay.

We understand that broadband engineering is a specialized field, and we do not expect every licensed engineer to come in with fiber experience. We can train the right person on our systems, standards, design practices, and project workflows.

What we do need is someone who is already licensed as a Professional Engineer, has strong technical judgment, takes accuracy seriously, and is willing to learn.

Why This Role Matters

Broadband infrastructure is essential to how people live, work, learn, and connect. As a Professional Engineer at Fibersmith, you’ll help ensure that network projects are thoughtfully designed, technically sound, and ready to support the communities that depend on them.

If you are a licensed Professional Engineer looking for an opportunity to apply your skills in a growing and meaningful industry, we’d love to hear from you.
