  • Assist with preliminary design elements as directed by consultants or project leadership.
  • Create and update digital maps using established standards for labeling, layers, symbology, attributes, and layouts.
  • Generate field and construction maps for staking, inspection, and other downstream activities.
  • Help keep plant records and project deliverables accurate and organized.

Project Documentation & Reporting

  • Prepare, generate, and update reports for project status, plant records, and internal tracking.
  • Maintain files, drawings, designs, and supporting documentation in Fibersmith’s document management system.
  • Follow proper naming, version control, and organization standards.
  • Help identify missing information, inconsistent data, or documentation gaps and ask questions early.

Field Data & Project Support

  • Collect or support the collection of field data, such as poles, foreign utilities, and other points of interest.
  • Travel up to 10–15% for job sites, industry events, or project needs.
  • Support other project tasks as assigned to help the team meet deadlines and maintain quality.

Permitting Support, When Assigned

Some Assistant Consultants may support permitting-related work, including:

  • Organizing permit documentation, exhibits, maps, application packets, and supporting forms.
  • Creating or updating permitting maps using 3GIS, ArcGIS, or CAD tools as required.
  • Tracking permit status updates and follow-ups in assigned systems.
  • Documenting locations clearly and consistently, including road names, road numbers, and highways when applicable.

What Makes Someone Successful in This Role

You may be a great fit if you are:

  • Detail-oriented and able to spot inconsistencies others may miss.
  • Comfortable following standards, workflows, and instructions.
  • Organized with files, notes, tracking updates, and project documentation.
  • Willing to ask questions early when something is unclear.
  • Comfortable working with technology and learning new software.
  • Able to manage multiple tasks with direction and support.
  • A strong team player who is open to coaching and feedback.
  • Interested in GIS, mapping, broadband, fiber networks, or engineering support work.
