Development Chemist
About this role
SUMMARY: This position is responsible for supporting Sales and Manufacturing efforts in growing the business through investigating new materials and development/refinement of new/current products and processes.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Develop rubber compounds to meet various customer specifications and in-house projects.
· Provide sale support pertaining to quotes and compound recommendations.
· Provide manufacturing support through process improvements and cost reductions efforts.
· Conduct research on manufactured products to develop and improve product.
· Assist in the implementation of new compounds into production.
· Prepare standards and specification for processes, facilities, products and tests.
· Maintain purchase material specifications, formulas, and lab report database.
· Work on special projects as needed.
· Perform other duties as required or requested.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITES:
· None
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
· Bachelor’s degree in Science or Chemical Engineering.
· 3 to 5 years elastomer experience; strong compounding ability in elastomers, especially the exotics such as FKM. Excellent knowledge of properties and applications of common elastomers. especially for sealing.
· 2 to 3 years direct manufacturing support experience.
· Experience with rubber mixing and processing equipment (Banbury, mill, extruder, etc.)
· Experience with a variety of manufacturing techniques (compression, transfer, injection, etc.)
· Experience with design of experiments, and with basic physical testing lab equipment.
· Experience in Automotive Supply Chain environment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general technical periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, part prints, material specifications and governmental regulations.
· Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
· Must be able to complete algebraic formulas.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
· Work environment consists of office, laboratory and manufacturing areas where there may be exposure to noise, varying temperatures, smells, and chemicals.
· Noise level is quiet to moderate over 2/3 of the time.
